The first weekend that it has been under 100 degrees, we did the right thing and took our tools and ourselves out to the garden to make some sense of the land. Actually, it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. I didn’t even need the tiller. We had let the garden die back for the past couple of weeks. I only watered my pepper plants. So when we went out to pull up the plants, they came out easily and the earth wasn’t hard to beak up at all. I would categorize this outing as a screaming success, especially since I didn’t end up screaming and frustrated and ready to sell the house.
Our next steps will be to fertilize and plant seedlings. I am so happy. I have been dreading the thought of going out to clear the garden. We were able to get the two 4×8′s done. And I kept a few plants, basil and pepper plants.
Next week I’ll start planting and finish clearing out the three 4×4′s. I’m not planning to add new beds this season. I think it would be too much for me to keep up with right now. I’m just planning to replant the beds we have and possibly add a bed in the spring.
My usual seedling suppliers are not around, our farmer’s market doesn’t start again until the end of October, so I’ll start some seeds. I picked up lettuce, spinach and kale. It’s good to get back in the garden.
